What the Heck is a Squeeze Page, And How Does it Build My List?

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

If you’re going to be a successful internet marketer, you’re going to have to build a list. That is; a collection of targeted subscriber’s email addresses to promote your products, services and memberships to. In order to build that list, your going to need a squeeze page at the very least.

A squeeze page, or “opt-in” is a single-page website which is designed for the sole purpose of collecting information from the prospective subscriber. It usually contains a brief description of what the visitor will receive after they enter their name and email address. This can be as brief as a couple of sentences, or it could resemble a mini-sales page with a couple of paragraphs, and bulleted text. Lately, many internet marketers use video and audio on their squeeze pages to get subscribers’ attention.

The most effective way to entice people to “opt-in” and enter their email address into the web form on your squeeze page is to offer them a free product or item of value. Such as an e-book, or report, application software, training materials, or other information that the subscriber would find valuable. This is known as an “ethical bribe”.

The name: “squeeze page” comes from the fact that the visitor can’t get to your free offer until he/she gives up their email address. There are no other options, other than to navigate away from the page, empty-handed.

You should also make sure that your squeeze page doesn’t have any “leaks”. Meaning that you prevent your visitors from by-passing your opt-in form to get to your free offer. Since anybody can view you squeeze page’s source code to find the URL of your download page, the best thing to do is to send the download link to your subscriber in your first email to them. So, in order for them to get that link, they’ll have to give up their email address.

Ok, so now that you know what a squeeze page is, the next question is; how do you get one? Well, if you have any web design skills, you could build one yourself, using an HTML editor, which can be time-consuming, and may not end up looking very attractive or professional – depending on your skill level.

You could pay a web designer to make your squeeze pages for you, but unless you know the designer personally, you never know what you’re going to get. And you could end up waiting a long time to get the finished product, (if you get it all… But that’s a topic for another article!) Not to mention that you could end up spending a small fortune, as you’re definitely going to need a variety of squeeze pages for different applications and markets.

Fortunately, there are plenty of resources for high-quality, professional looking squeeze pages out there. Most of these sources have very reasonable prices, and offer squeeze pages that take advantage of current marketing strategies, such as the ability to embed video clips and audio tracks. These types of squeeze pages have been shown to be highly effective in converting curious visitors into subscribers, which are essential to your marketing success.

How to Fix a Leakey Squeeze Page

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

The function of a squeeze page is to persuade visitors to give you their email address in exchange for your free offer of an ebook, report, software, video, or some other item of value. But if your squeeze page has leaks, you could be letting potential subscribers (ie; potential customers) slip through your fingers.

So, what is a “leak”? Specifically speaking, a leak is anything that allows a visitor to by-pass your opt-in and gain access to your special offer without entering their email address. Generally speaking, anything that distracts your visitor, or leads them away from your squeeze page could be considered a leak.

Feed Your Visitors – Don’t Let Them Help Themselves

If your squeeze page re-directs your visitor to a download page, or a “Thank You” page with a download link after they enter their name and email address, you’re giving them an opportunity to help themselves. All they would have to do is take a look at the source code of your squeeze page (right click and select “view page source”) to get the URL of your download page, and go there directly.

You can eliminate this situation by only sending the visitor a download link via email. Make sure you tell your visitors to watch their inbox for an email containing the link to download their free product. This lets them know that if they want the product, they’re gonna have to pony up their email address.

You should also make the download URL something that’s not easy to guess. For example, if your give-away product is called: “Easy Dog Training”, don’t use: “easydogtrainingdownload.com” as the URL. Use something more cryptic, like: “9374-edtxdl.com”. You may also want to cloak the link with anchor text, or use a re-direct, just so it looks clean.

One Way In – One Way Out

The reason why it’s called a “squeeze” page is because the visitor is given only two choices… Either accept the offer, or walk away. They already have the option to navigate away from the page, so you don’t want to offer up additional reasons to leave.. Your opt-in page should have no external links to your blog, or your affiliate sites, or your facebook page, etc… If you allow the prospective subscriber to visit another website, or go to another page, the odds of them returning to opt-in are statistically, very slim.

Keep Them Focused on the Carrot, Not the Stick

The SOLE purpose of a squeeze page is to build your list. Anything that draws your visitor’s attention away from your opt-in completely defeats that purpose. The only thing you want your visitors thinking about is receiving that free product. This is not the time to try to sell them something else, or confuse them with unrelated offers. You’ll have time for all that after they join your list. Make sure your copy is laser-focused and does a good job of getting the visitor excited about your free offer. When it comes down to it, you’re still selling a product… They’re just paying with information instead of money.

List Building

Monday, December 6th, 2010

One of the recommended things for an Internet Marketer to do is to build an opt-in email list. The results from promoting to your list can be very rewarding. Lists also allow you to enter into joint ventures with other Internet Marketers. This allows you to promote their products to your list and in return they will promote your products to their list. This can increase the reach of your product promotions.

I made an attempt to start a list about a year ago, without success. I produced an ebook and offered it as a free incentive to sign up for my list. The primary problem is probably that there is a lack of traffic to the site, a problem that I have begun to address.

It occurred to me today that I do have a reasonably sized list available. I have put up several niche article directories and one general directory. I have these set up to send an email when an article is accepted for publication. I do know that these emails are sent because I see auto-responder replies from time to time. I can edit the automatic messages that are sent to this ‘list’. As I see it, I do have a right to communicate with my authors, and there is an opt-out mechanism in the script.

The only problem appears to be that the emails are plain text. I have tried to insert an anchor text link, but it comes through as plain text. My email client recognizes the Internet site and makes the link within the href clickable, but it is a messy and inelegant approach. Since I don’t want to send affiliate links in the clear this is a bit of a problem. I can, however, put up a redirect script on my sites that will send visitors to the affiliate pages giving me the credit without displaying the affiliate link directly. This is the recommended proceedure to use whenever an affiliate link is used. It still will not be as elegant as an anchor text link, but it will be much better than flying an affiliate link in the clear.

I will do some more digging to see if these emails can be sent as html/plain text, but if this can not be done I will use my workaround. I will be adding two or three links that target internet marketers to the automatic emails soon!

Do you have any ‘lists’ like the one I discovered today? Can you make use of that list in your Internet Marketing efforts?

Are You Getting Traffic From Your List?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

If there’s one thing that has been true ever since the Internet was first created, it’s the fact that the money is really in your list. As a matter of fact, some people are taking list building to the next level and are now receiving so much traffic from the list that they have stopped looking for additional traffic from other sources. After all, we are limited in the amount of time that we can use for marketing on a daily basis, and if you find something that is working as well as having a list, there is no need to look for outside sources.

The unfortunate thing is, it can be difficult to build a list in today’s Internet environment. There was a time, perhaps 6 to 10 years ago whenever people would sign up for absolutely anything that you put in front of their face. Today, however, people are just too busy with e-mail and are inundated by spam so they will be very protective of their e-mail address as a form of contact. That is why it is necessary for you to make sure that you are pushing the right buttons in order to get them to sign-up.

One of the best ways for you to be able to do this is to use a squeeze page. A squeeze page is simply a webpage that has no other exit points other than the subscribe box. This helps to focus people on the fact that they need to sign-up in order to get whatever it is that you are offering. It often helps if you offer something for free, such as a report or perhaps a piece of software. The better your offer, the higher of a percentage you’re going to get of people that are signing up for your list.

You also need to work on the copy and design of your squeeze page as well. This is a never-ending process that is done by A/B split testing. In other words, you would test one design against another design in order to see which works better for you. As soon as you are able to determine a clear winner, you would begin testing it against a third design. This can help you to get a higher percentage of individuals that are signing up for your e-mail and will help to keep you from wasting efforts in driving traffic to that squeeze page.

Of course, once you have the list set up, it is necessary for you to treat them properly in order to make them responsive. The average subscriber has a response time of less than one month, so you must make sure that you’re getting your marketing message out to them as early as possible. If you do so in a way that does not inundate them with marketing, making them feel as if they are simply being sold to, you can actually increase your sales considerably.
