Building Brand Identity: How Wikipedia Defines Branding Success

Monday, September 19th, 2011

It is instructive and inspiring to take a look at the people who have succeeded in your field. Whether it’s an attempt to learn from their mistakes and victories or just a pause to reflect on the admirable accomplishments of another, studying the work of those who’ve set the benchmark can inspire reflection and spur us on to greater heights.

The world of branding success stories is one of the most fickle, given the rise of the web. Every day, there is more new information generated and discarded than has existed for most of human history. Trends and fads come and go with ever-increasing speed, and things considered hilarious and exciting baffle people just a few months later. Then there are successes that fundamentally change the way the world sees things. They become so ingrained that everyone wonders where they’d been the whole time.

Wikipedia

There is not enough good in the world to say about the Wiki project. Those who would criticize it for lacking accuracy and scholarly rigor have totally missed the point. Wikipedia is the spirit of what the web is meant to be. It is cooperative, self-correcting, open to interpretation, controversial and dynamic. Ever changing and yet extremely distinct, it represents the purest expression of what the web can and is meant to do. People are talking about Web 2.0, but it’s honestly already here in the form of the Wiki.

Wikipedia is a simple idea, one so straightforward that it could be imagined it shouldn’t work – an encyclopedia free of charge, open for anyone in the world to edit. It shouldn’t continue to exist, by all logic. The internet is full of trolls who will eagerly fax sheets of black paper to people they’re displeased with, over and over until the receiving machine runs out of ink and seizes up. What in the world is to stop them from vandalizing the heck out of every Wiki page they come across, a fate that many other Wikis indeed have succumbed to?

The answer is that Wiki has taken its audience seriously, appealing to its sense of pride and self-interest.

For every troll who hops onto a Wikipedia or Wikiquote article and scrawls quotes calling the moral and social behaviors of the editors into question, there is someone else who is incredibly well-informed about that page, backed up by both a number of authoritative sources and a deep pride in their work. Vandalism is steadily defeated through pride and reversion, and the sheer scale of people who want a good, quality resource.

In allowing anyone to edit, and treating those edits as matters worth discussing on cooperative terms, the Wiki project has ignited a sense of pride in people. Now they want the articles to succeed; they want to see their hard work displayed on the front page as a featured article.

Additionally, the Wiki project chose an iconic visual aesthetic for itself: White background, clean lines, plain text and simple images. Yes, anyone can edit a page as they like, but the project rewards pages that comply with its style guides and presentational standards. So whenever someone says “Wiki,” people imagine that little puzzle-globe logo, the way a page is set up and the little blue edit tabs in the corner.

Of course, one of the best ways to judge the success of a project is to judge that of its emulators. So for comparison’s sake, let us consider a relative newcomer even to the open-source editing style: TV Tropes.

TV Tropes

A trope is a rhetorical device. The damsel in distress is a trope, as is the idea of having just one bullet left in the final sequence of an action film. They aren’t exactly cliches, though they can become so. Rather, they are patterns that people have learned to recognize in conversation, argument and entertainment that form the basis of all communication.

TV Tropes is a website based on two ideas: First, tropes are awesome things that deserve discussion, admiration and study, and second, everyone has something to contribute. The site does not use the Wiki format, but does have an open policy on allowing people to comment and post about the tropes they find interesting.

Pages on the TV Tropes site range from those discussing a specific trope to those showing a film or book and listing the tropes present in it. All are freely editable.

The success of the TV Tropes project may not be measurable monetarily like Wikipedia’s or other more commercial ventures. However, the project has become intensely popular all the same. It has the same “well, I’ll click one more link” popularity that Wikipedia had cornered for itself, and the same “I can talk about what I like here and be taken seriously” appeal as all open source projects. People reference tropes in casual conversation on message boards, and it’s creating a communal language.

That really is the key behind these two projects – brain extension. They’ve taken a good idea and brought it into the common discourse, allowing people to communicate with each other. People can discuss differing myths from literature, and realize they’re talking about the same trope, even if it’s not the same story. People automatically click to Wiki for information if they need some quick discussion material. For those who want to take a lesson from the Wiki style of success, remember that it emphasizes not the product, but the way the audience is using and sharing words, language and information.

Techniques and Tips to Use Search Engines

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

The internet is a superb place rich in helpful resources, which will come your way through a virtual search engine. The search engines operates in a very simple way; it will explore the resources available on the net and produce outcomes depending on your query. They will allow an internet user to use keywords and phrases in the search engine box and will consequently use crawlers to trace the sites or the pages that match your specific request.

That said, getting the best information as pertaining to your query could be the challenge because every single new day many web pages come into existence. A simple request like “web hosting” on a search engine like Google will return 199,000,000 results. Easy methods to know the most useful result is the task hence will develop an ‘information overload” of some kind. Its no wonder users will always doubt the quality of the resulting facts.

A good thing about the search engines is that they can display all web pages which have any or all the words you keyed in on your search query. This leads us to that important question, how do you get the specific information that I want? There are numerous of procedures you can apply to ensure your search query is more simplified consequently get more relevant results.

As an example, you can use the ” ” operator and modify your search query to similar to “web hosting windows”. This provides you with results coming from all web sites that provide windows hosting. An additional alternative is to use “AND” Boolean operator. Should you used the “-” operator, i.e. “web hosting-windows” It will communicate to the search engine that it should display most results minus anything related to windows. This really is the same as using the “NOT” Boolean operator.

A number of search engines will use key phrases like NEAR, ADJ etc and in this case, when for example you use the NEAR operator, it will look for all key phrases that are specified in the search results query within some very close proximity of one another. As such, the search engine will make sure that the key phrases can be found in the same page and appear near each other. The ADJ operator on the other hand filters through strictly and returns only web sites where the keywords are next to one another.

An additional strategy to make sure you get great results is to key in a sensible query. Utilize words that you feel will appear inside the web site you’re searching for. As an example, “web hosting” is more sensible than “I want web hosting”. Be advised that search engines will eliminate such words like “of”, “for”, “a’, “in”, “at” etc. Of equal importance to keep in mind is always that search engines will always have a ‘tips’ site that will contain info specifically meant to enlighten you on how to create a more relevant search for the search engine. It is usually advisable to read such tips.

Major search engines these days have an advanced search option that also comes in handy if one isn’t proficient enough at using search operators while conducting their internet searches. Searching on the net is one thing, finding what you are searching for is one more thing altogether, but both can be easy if you have the know-how to get it done.

From back-linking to social networking, search engine companies are performing all sorts of tricks that help you get more visibility. The question is however, do they work?

Typically, search engine optimization was always a case of onsite optimization followed by a period of offsite optimization which incorporated things such as link building, link exchanges and also rudimentary forms of Internet Marketing. Social networking has really been the poster child of the modern Internet and for many businesses; it’s also their secret when it comes to providing affordable SEO Services. This is why it is always important to build a good foundation of SEO and to always, always remember that search engine optimization is a constantly ongoing process.

Finding a Job: Prepared Enough?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

If you are armed with the credentials and the right attitude, finding a job should be fairly easy. But then again, in the cutthroat job market – we spell that as rigid competition in a setting where employment is scarce, things are rather easier said than done. A good resume will serve you well but you need a practical guide in plotting your route.

Yes, finding a job these days is difficult and by the looks of it a great dose of patience will take you there: a decent career. Read along and see where the roads open up for you.

As far as leading the way to various jobs available, the classified ads section of newspapers will never fail you. National newspapers have broader, more varied recruitment sections and they attract larger employers and stable companies. But do not discount the local newspapers. Smaller companies based in your locality will advertise their jobs in local newspapers as they are more affordable compared to hiring services of an agency or an employment website to handle their recruitment. It might surprise you that there is less competition going in your area for the kind of work that you are gunning for.

Same going with newspapers, the Internet is highly accessible these days. And we are taking of convenient job-hunting because you need not leave the house and dress up to submit your resume. Even, with the advent teleconferencing facilities and instant messaging services, initial interviews and exams are conducted online. And then the idea of working from home as an Independent Contractor might appeal to you. The band of freelancers managing home offices are here for some time now.

For want of greater chances, think of anyone that may be able to refer you to their employer. And your friend will be too happy to take you along. There are larger organisations which offer bonuses to employees for suggesting a candidate for a job. Be very good and never fail your friend. Else, she’ll regret the moment, the bonus notwithstanding.

However, the pride burning in you wants finding a job the hard way – your way. By all means, do the works and the walk. Start by making a really impressive, weighty curriculum vitae then make a list of employers that you would like to work for and send or personally deliver your CV (with a neat cover letter) to the Human Resources departments of these companies. Do not forget to follow it up with a phone call.

True, hard work pays but there are less-stress options, too. How about visiting a recruitment agency and hand over your Resume? Basically, it cuts the chase because they will do the career-company matching for you. Be wary though of extra fees that some recruitment agencies charge for their kind of services.

And when it comes to accepting the job, it all comes back to the right attitude. Be sure of your career and personal goals. Weigh up the odds and ends. Realize that many people switch jobs to get away from a bad situation. Yes, even in the best workplaces, be very prepared for unwelcome situations to come your way

Diversifying Your Income

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

One of the essential things you must know with your website is that you need to expand your income.

Supposing most of your ads are with Google AdSense. Let’s suppose it makes up 90% of your website’s earnings. Let’s suppose Google will suspend your account! What would you do if you lose 90% of your website’s profit? Can you recover immediately? For most individuals, they would not.

Therefore if you have a website, diversify your earnings by not only utilizing Pay Per Click sponsors, but perhaps use a Direct Leads sponsor, a CPA sponsor, or even promote other products or services and get paid a commission per sale.

One of the simplest ways for an internet newbie to start earning cash in the internet that is fast and easy is through CPA (cost per action) Marketing! In order for you to bring in money, this style of affiliate marketing requires the consumers to complete a particular action that the advertisers would want them to do.

So how does CPA Affiliate Marketing work and, more importantly, how do you make money from it!

In essence, you are a traffic broker and CPA networks acts as the middlemen. For the leads you make, you get a commission from that particular advertiser. The major difference with the usual affiliate marketing and Cost per Action marketing is that there is no need to make prior sales to get the commission. You have to simply convince the internet surfers to click on your advertisement and act as the advertiser would like them to do, such as signing up for a sample product or make an email subscription. Because a surfer doesn’t have to buy anything, and in fact even have a chance to obtain a sample product or a free trial, it is actually easier for them to fill out a form or make an email subscription. CPA networking often makes conversions a lot simpler . One problem with it though is that CPA marketing can be highly competitive.

Opening other websites is another way of multiplying one’s profit. At present, I have quite a few websites that I build profit from. Roughly 4 months back, Google banned one of my sites from their search engine! Among internet marketers, this is a common occurrence. It seems that my site had several outgoing links to sponsor ads and they regard it a “link farm”. But that site at the time was earning me something like $1000 per month. Imagine what could have happened if I didn’t have my other websites to pick up the slack?

Having them on different servers is another way of increasing your online earnings. These days, it’s cheap to host a website. Let’s suppose you throw one or two of them up on a $5.99 a month server and pay for a year’s worth of hosting, then you’re on the right track. Not only does it have search engine benefits, but if one of your servers should go down, not all of your sites are down at once.

If you want to earn the most money online then you certainly need to broaden your income streams.

Internet Laws And Internet Business

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

People have this notion that everything goes when it comes to the Internet. Anybody can launch an e-commerce website today and take it out the following morning without legal consequences. But this notion couldn’t be further from the truth. A website owner can be sued and can be liable to everything he or she puts on her website. And the Internet legal obligations are even more precise for e-commerce website owners so that knowing your rights and obligations before starting an Internet business is vital. You don’t want to be like Target who was penalized for failing to make its website friendly to the blind.

Customer Privacy Law

Like you want your personal information to be kept between you and the store you bought items from, your customers want you to protect personal information you collect from them too. When you have an e-commerce site, you always collect some information you’re your customers or your website visitors like name, email address, to more sensitive information like credit card number or bank account number. You are required by federal and state laws to protect this vital information! This entails installing the latest security system on your e-commerce site to deter identity theft.

Tax Law

Unlike collecting sales tax in a physical store, a slightly different approach is applied to online stores. The Supreme Court states that if you don’t have a physical store in a particular area where a tax law applies, then you are not required to collect sales tax from customers in that area. However, if you have a physical store in a particular tax law jurisdiction, then you are obliged to collect sales tax from your customers residing in the area. Moreover, aside from sales tax, you are also responsible for your personal income tax arising from the sales you made from your e-commerce site.

International Sales

Since you sell products on the Web, you’re most likely going to ship products outside the nation too. Once you ship a product or service abroad in exchange for money, then your e-commerce site is subject to duties, customs, and international protection laws. Make sure you adhere to the laws of the land and the laws that apply to Internet businesses to the country you sell your products to if there are any. However, it’s also not surprising that there are countries, especially from the third world, that do not have laws that govern Internet business yet. So it’s still okay to accept buyers from these countries without worrying too much about which law should apply.

Advertising and Marketing Law

Whatever advertising and marketing law that applies to a physical store also applies to an e-commerce site plus more. In the internet, it’s easy to put hidden codes that can solicit other information aside from what your customers think they are giving. This is clearly a violation to fare advertising and marketing laws. And this is very important: you must provide your subscriber an option to stop receiving promo/email newsletters from you should they wish to.

Digital Rights Law

The intellectual copyright law also applies to your e-commerce business. You can’t use copyrighted digital works such as text, sound, movies, or clips on your site without prior notice and consent of the owner.

Often these unscrupulous companies deliver results by cutting shortcuts and simply doing whatever it takes, essentially cheating the search engines.

While no one disputes the effectiveness of these services, the reality is that the search engines are able to detect every shortcut through the system.
